The New Mexico Children's Cabinet

The Director of the Children's Cabinet is the Youth Alliance Coordinator's key state government contact. The New Mexico Children's Cabinet is chaired by the Lt. Governor and is comprised of the following 11 agency heads: Children, Youth and Families Department, Corrections Department, Human Services Department, Labor Department, Health Department, Department of Finance and Administration, Department of Economic Development, Department of Public Safety, Department of Aging and Long-Term Care, Education Department and the Office of African American Affairs, and the Office of Educational Accountability. The Children's Cabinet strategically invests state resources in improving the lives of New Mexico 's children by increasing collaboration among state departments. Established by Executive Order of Governor Bill Richardson in February 2003, the Children's Cabinet goal is to streamline services and reduce bureaucratic red tape. It tracks child well-being indicators such as teen birth rate, infant mortality rates, rates of crimes against children, dropout rates, and immunization rates. By looking at these indicators, Children's Cabinet officials hope to be able to adjust policies as needed to ensure they meet the needs of families and children.

The New Mexico Forum for Youth in Community

The Forum administers the Youth Alliance. The Forum is the nonprofit, nonpartisan, intermediary between national and state funders, government officials, policy researchers, business community, and state and local youth-serving organizations. By convening these various parties, the Forum enables systems change, leveraging of funds, capacity-building, and information-sharing.

The Forum's public-private partnership mission enables it to:

•  Change how young people are viewed and responded to by communities and major social institutions;

•  Develop local and state-wide strategies that engage youth in a wide variety of positive and constructive activities;

•  Instill a sense of long-term hope, aspiration, and sense of real possibility; to advocate for policies and funding streams that support young people's full development; and

•  Create policies and initiatives that directly impact opportunities for youth.
